Please be aware that there has been a change in ListenNJ policy which is effective immediately.

You now have 3 days to pick up your HOLDs in ListenNJ. (Previously you had five days).

Don't be fooled by the name. ListenNJ now offers a collection of over 1,300 ebooks in an ever growing collection (as well as over 6,000 audiobooks available for download).

Remember to chooose Libraries of Middlesex Automation Consortium as your library.

The Library subscribes to VISUAL THESAURUS, a database that gives you all kinds of information about words and language. You can explore words through this very inviting interface that locates your word at the center of a diagram. One of it's features is a set of boxes to the right which break down the word into its various usages as a noun, adjective, verb, or adverb. You can even turn these on or off if you want to concentrate on only one part of speech.

Don't Be Fooled by the Name ...

ListenNJ is our downloadable platform. This service began several years ago, with audiobooks. Formats that were friendly to iPod devices were then added, and recently eBooks were added. The latest addition is a console that can be viewed/listened to on your iPhone.

ListenNJ includes more than 5,000 audiobook titles, and more than 600 eBook titles, in a growing collection that is added to monthly.

Audiobook titles can be downloaded to your computer, transferred to an MP3 player, and many titles can be burned to disc to use in your car. Information about Compatible audio devices can be found here.

eBooks are in ePub format. Basic information can be found in this HELP file. You can find information about eBook compatible devices here. The Kindle is not compatible because of the ePub file format, and while the iPad can handle the ePub format, it is not compatible because of DRM (DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT) restrictions.

The Garden State in Primetime

This week I heard that Merriam-Webster is adding new words to the dictionary, including one of my favorites, “locavore”. It simply means, eating foods that are grown locally. Although I had heard the word before, I really came to understand (and appreciate) it while reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: a year of food life by Barbara Kingsolver. It is a book rich with food for thought, and recipes you might want to try if you can just put down the book. In this day and age of good and plenty, imagine voluntarily limiting yourself to only food that you yourself raised, and that was in season. (I invite you to just *imagine* this exercise, as actually putting this into practice is certainly beyond most of our lifestyles). But the imagining is a worthy exercise, if only to refocus us on the wonderful bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables that we have in this season where we live, namely in the Garden State.

If this puts you in the right frame of mind, you might want to try out our new local Farmers Market.

If I sound excited about this program, it's because I have had the pleasure of hearing Spook perform, and know that you are in for a real treat.

This is a fun-packed program for children diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but everyone is welcome. Sing along and learn stories behind some of America's favorite folk songs.

This is an event for the whole family, caregivers, and the general public.

The GET HELP site offers links to information about jobs and finance, housing and health resources, as well as information targeted specifically to parents, and seniors.

In the CAREER LIBRARY you will find a wealth of information to help you decide on a career as well as links to current jobs. You can click on the yellow Exploration Center tab, then click the link for State Data, and then the link for New Jersey Employment Opportunities to see what's available. Some sites will require registration.

Tax Forms Have Arrived

In 1789, Benjamin Franklin wrote "Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency, but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." For the last 219 years Franklin has been correct, and again this year is no exception.

Both federal and state income forms have begun to arrive at the South River Public Library for your convenience. If our supplies become depleted, we would be happy to print forms from the Internet at $.15 per page. We will also keep copies of all instructions at the Circulation Desk for use at the Library so that patrons can avoid the expense of printing instructions.

IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TAC) are your source of face-to-face personal tax help when you believe your tax issue cannot be handled online or over the phone. Federal Tax Return Preparation is also available at IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers for individuals who qualify for Earned Income Tax Credit or for individuals whose income is less than $40,000.

FREE 'VIDEOTAPE' RENTALS All Videotapes are now free and may be kept for a period of 7 days.
Even our Entertainment DVDs rent for only $1.50 for 3 days. You may extend this period to 5 days by renting on a Thursday.

DON'T BUY BOOKS OR MAGAZINES Buying books and magazines are expensive. South River Library receives 140 magazine titles each month, and there is no cost to borrow books or magazines. We will also make every attempt to find any title you want.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT FOR CHILDREN Dawn, our Children's Librarian, always has wonderful programs for the Children. Please check our Events Calendar for current programs.

SOCIALIZE Join our lively Book Discussion group, or come and watch a film with us.

COUPONS We keep the Sunday newspaper coupons for our visitors.

FOOD FOR FINES PROGRAM We hope to help the South River Food Bank through our "Food for Fines" program. Library users with overdue materials and the associated overdue fees can have those fees waived by donating non-perishable foods during the month of August. This helps the Food Bank and our patrons.

Libraries can be proud of their return on investment. They provided needed services and come through for the public especially in tough times.

Save the Earth

Traditional South River colors are burgandy and gray. Now, two young environmental enthusiasts, Ally and Lindsea, are encouraging the borough to "GO GREEN". Kids ages 5-10 are invited to join the group in Saving the Earth, Tuesdays 5 p.m. at the South River Public Library. The 6-week class heightens environmental awareness through homemade movies, crafts, trivia, board games and songs with an Earthy twist, trail walks and more. Make a difference, join the fun!

Youth Art Month display @ the South River Public Library

Congratulations to Mrs. Grimm's High School Art 3 class on their creative transformation of shoes using the addititve and subtractive sculptural methods to disguise and change the shoe into something else. The original shapes of the shoes were taken into consideration for the inspirational and creative designs that resulted. The works are entitled, "Shoes in Another Life".

Be sure to stop by the public library anytime throughout the month of March to enjoy the work of these talented artists. Sculptures are on display by the following high school students: Christopher Dowd, Dan Hartrum, Jasmine Pearson, Alex Gomes, Dino Silva, Johnny Domingues, Megan Atkinson, DonnaMarie Smith, Mike Witte, Jessica Wallace, Adriana Millan, Dan Andre, Stephane Lizardo, and Jonathan Separvoich.

It's a regular LOVE FEST in February ...

Andrea: "Love is all around us" as February brings us "Love Your Library Month" coupled with our Patron Appreciation month. The Library is bedecked with hearts and "love"ly quotes to help get you in the mood. So exactly how can you love your library?

Dawn: Book lovers have an easy way to express their love of books and libraries. The New Jersey State Library is partnering with Barnes and Noble and the New Jersey Library Association to promote "Love Your Library" month all during the month of February. The plan is simple: Pick up a book fair voucher at our local library, or print one online from the New Jersey State Library Youth Services or the New Jersey Library Association site, or just ask your Barnes and Noble cashier for one upon checkout. All Barnes and Noble locations throughout NJ are participating in this month long celebration. A percentage of every purchase from every customer will be donated to help raise funds to benefit the children and young adults who participate in the 2008 Summer Reading Programs. The theme of the 2008 Summer Reading Program is "Catch the Reading Bug". Our very own South River Library wants to show our patrons how much we love them back. What can we do to send a little message of thanks and appreciation to all our great library users?

Susan: As a little thank you, we are giving each patron who borrows 3 or more items during a library visit a coupon redeemable for 1 free DVD rental (Limit 1 coupon per day). A Twitter in Time ...

I love the tech stuff, but I don't get it all ... Facebook, MySpace, and just today I heard about CyWorld and something for kids called Club Penguin. And then there's Twitter. Tonight at the South River Library was a real Twitter moment. The simple question that Twitter poses is: What are you doing right now? For many of our folks, the answer might start ... "I'm at the Library ..."

Dawn, our Children's Librarian extraordinaire, held an audience of children captive with her storytelling as you can see in the photo above. (I'm beginning to think that she's part elf herself.) They were waiting to go downstairs to see Mrs. Klaus, who was going to entertain them next. And from the happy sounds that are wafting up the staircase to my office, I think Mrs. Klaus is holding her own.

Upstairs the Scouts were holding a meeting to be followed by the Book Discussion group.

And in between were patrons doing normal, everyday library activities - reading the newspaper (although that may have been challenging under the circumstances), browsing for books, using our public access computers, and playing games on the children's computers.

The tutor and her student peeked upstairs in the Loft looking for a quieter spot, but alas that spot too, was taken by library staff working on projects. Other staff members were decking the ~~halls~~ walls with greenery in honor of the holiday season.

I just wanted to share with you this special moment in time at the Library, and take an opportunity to say Thank You for your support ... the best measure of which is your use of our resources and programs.

No man is an island

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND, AND THAT SENTIMENT OF CONNECTEDNESS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE OF LIBRARY ORGANIZATIONS TODAY.

The services that libraries can and do offer are a rich synthesis of the hard work of various groups of people: library staff, Trustees, government officials, our library Friends, our partners in the community, our State Library, library cooperatives, library consortia, as well as our neighboring libraries. By pooling our resources, talent, and ideas, we have made libraries much more responsive to our patrons needs, more visible in our communties, and better values for our tax dollars. By continually analyzing and re-asessesing "all things library", we move the bar upward, and then stretch to meet that new standard.

In Middlesex County, one day a year, we gather together at the Annual LMx Awards Reception to enjoy each others company and recognize the accomplishments of these groups. Last night was our night in 2006.

The award for Public Official of the Year went to Congressman, Rush Holt, who has long been our champion. He spoke about the value of libraries today in preserving democracy, and safeguarding our rights in the era of the Patriots' Act. He characterized librarians as feisty, and powerful, and valuable, a portrayal which stands in contrast to the traditional, stereotypical view of librarians.

Another awardee, recently retired Colleen Fantini of the Dunellen Public Library, emphasized that it is the people who work in libraries who are their greatest asset. I agree, and would add to that group, the people who work for libraries. Much of what you see in libraries represents "only the tip of the iceberg" in terms of effort expended. It is nice to have an opportunity to appreciate the varied efforts behind the scenes that make it all happen.

So ... thanks to all of you who make the South River Libray the best that it can be. We couldn't do it without you.

The Library is boring!

Yes, we are! But I don't mean in the way some of you might think.

For all of you who have inquired about how the Library expansion project is going, I offer you this update. We are working very hard on developing the design and doing the behind the scenes work. We continue to meet with the architects, and the engineers, civil, mechanical, and geotechnical come and go doing their thing.

Today, we are getting our soil bored … and this nifty little machine is sampling the soil 15 ft or so below in a couple of spots around the Library to make sure that we are on solid ground, both literally and metaphorically.

It's September, and you know what that means ...

GO, RAMS, GO! And I hear the opening game provided an exciting contest with a surprise ending touchdown. I hope the rest of the season is equally satisfying.

So, if we're into football season, that means we're back to school. We're buying notebooks, and flash drives, protractors (does anybody still use protractors?) , and new jeans, backpacks, and ... about a million things more. And in the flurry of all that back-to-school shopping, some of you might have forgotten a very important accessory that no well-dressed student could be without. (Many of you who know me will be bewildered by this foray into fashion reporting. After all, no-one could ever confuse me with a fashionista. I only have two rules of fashion: (1) Is it clean? and (2) Is it black? But this is one area I know well.) And that accessory would be ... your library card!

It's stylish, it's colorful ... it's FREE, and it can be very, very helpful with those book reports, papers, and projects your teachers are dreaming up for you. It even comes with a key tag, so it's compact and convenient.

Libraries are where you make friends ...

What do you think of when I say the word, LIBRARY?

I bet for most of you what comes to mind is books, and that’s OK because the book is the most recognizable icon associated with libraries and probably the most common answer to that question. (In an OCLC study , nothing even came close … )

So, we're all about books. Well ... , yes and no.

As libraries reinvent themselves to try to stay apace with our rapidly evolving world, they have also broadened their missions to include other roles now, including that of the “community commons”. Simply, a place where members of the community cross paths, deliberately or accidentally and exchange pleasantries. In other words, libraries have accepted a social role. This takes many forms, this blog being one of them (allowing me a space to have a conversation with you). But perhaps one of the most powerful manifestations is just that people meet at the library … they talk to each other (and exchange ideas) …and often they make friends.

Create a Giant Me Paperdoll

I just love activities where you can let your imagination soar. I probably didn't get enough craft time growing up. So I'm thrilled to tell you about an ACTIVITY at the Library that Dawn, our wonderful Children's Librarian has designed to celebrate and highlight the library collection.

Pick up your extra-large cardstock person--take it home and decorate it, including in one of its hands a picture of your favorite library materials. Return it to the library on or before September 6th. The decorated “giant-me” posters will be displayed in various locations throughout South River to celebrate September as “National Library Sign-Up Month”

So here is your chance to have blue hair (or corn rows), dress outlandishly (or stylishly), bedeck yourself in buttons and bows, or whatever your heart desires ... and share your favorite library material (which is what libraries are all about anyway).

So come in and see us and ask for your giant me paperdoll at the circulation desk!

LET ME GUESS. Who belongs to who???

FOUR OF OUR YOUNGER PATRONS try to puzzle out who belongs to who.

The theme for Summer Reading this year was "Paws, Claws, Snails, and Tales", and children in the program explored all things animal. Currently the Library is offering a matching game featuring the staff of the Library and their pets.

Twelve of our staff members live with "furries" who say "Woof" or "Meow" (not an exotic creature among us). Pictures of us and our pets are in the display case, along with the prize, a nifty chameleon puppet, who is looking for a home. Pick up your entry at the Library and just hand it in to the Circ desk when you are done with your guessing. We will accept them through Labor Day (until closing on Tuesday, September 5th).

While we're on the subject, let me take a minute to recommend two books. The writers and photographers certainly understand cats and it shows.

Summer Reading and Summer Reading Lists

It’s August, and that means that back to school is looming in the not too distant future. (I'm sorry to bring it up). It also means it’s prime time for Summer Reading.

I know of two rules that will make Summer Reading a great experience. One is to pick a wonderful book, and the second is to give yourself plenty of time to read it so that you’re not pressed for time. This allows for the story to unfold and grab you, rather than reading at the speed of light just to get to the end.

Above, Sam, our Library Page, and Vicky, who was the Director of the Library for a day, show off some choices for you.

To make it easy for you, the Library has purchased lots of copies of the books on the list (as you can see in the photo) and you can find the lists right below. All you have to do is choose a book and enjoy! So come in and see us...we love the company!

In this space, we hope to introduce (and re-introduce you) to offerings at your Library. We hope we can help you to see that libraries are no longer just a building with books (although we still think that's a pretty nifty idea). We want you to understand that the Library can be a bridge connecting various parts of our communities ... a community crossroads, where different members of the community come and exchange ideas. Today I want you to think about that idea by introducing you to Gary.

Gary Tsiperfal, left, is a resident of East Brunswick, a Rutgers graduate, and a local artist. He is kindly sharing some of his paintings with us, and we would like to share them with you by inviting you to the Library to see them. You can visit Gary virtually via his website at www.garytsip.zoomshare.com, but we love to see you, so stop by and say hello.

We have limited display space, so we've "hung" his paintings above our magazine shelves. And speaking of magazines...(TUNE IN NEXT TIME, and we'll talk about magazines...).

“Playaways” Are on Their Way

Playaways are pre-loaded audiobook-and-player in one digital devices. These audiobooks are ready for immediate use: they go directly from the library shelf to a patron’s ears. Just plug in the headphone jack, put in the ear buds and listen. They are more convenient and easier to use than the audiobooks with multiple cds or cassettes. They do not require downloading nor the purchase of a MP3 player.

Playaways are smaller than an iPod and are about half the size of a deck of cards. They measure 3”x 2”x ¼” and weigh about 6 oz. They easily fit into a pocket or a purse. They can be worn comfortably around the neck on a lanyard.

Playaways are designed with a universal headphone jack and work with almost any type of headphone, speakers, or car adapter.

Playaways allow the listener to control the speed of the narrator’s voice and to digitally bookmark up to 50 spots.

Andrea has worked with LMxAC to create a new item type for these devices. The new type is the PLAYAWAY. These items will circulate like other audiobooks…For 3 weeks, unlimited renewal, overdue fines of $.10/day with a maximum fine of $5.00 for adult title and $3.00 for juvenile titles. These items may be checked out in person by any patron type (SRNONRES, SRRECIP). However, only South River patron may place holds on them.

These devices must be returned to the circulation desk and like other AV materials may not be returned to the drop box. We still have many unanswered questions concerning these items and please feel to add your questions to the existing list.

Will we sell ear buds and batteries?
Do we provide batteries for the first 12 hours?
Should we pre-attach the lanyards?
Does the player provide a "low battery" warning or visible estimated time available remaining on battery?
Are rechargeable batteries available for Playaways?

Did you hear a splash? Yes??? That was the sound of the South River Library jumping into the blogosphere. We'll be using this space to open a dialogue with you - trying to keep you up with all the new things that are happening at the Library (and introduce you to some of the old things that you may have missed). Things like updates for the Library Expansion project...upcoming programs...materials that we liked.
